Yesterday on my weekly grocery shopping trip I picked up a clam shell full of the most delicious looking strawberries. As I made my way to the cashier I started thinking about all of the wonderful meals and drinks I could make and that’s when it hit me…. It’s not strawberry season, so where did these beauties come from? I put them back and proceeded to the checkout. Why you might ask?

Well there are two things: First, in this 80/20 Paleo lifestyle one of the few things I try to remember and practice is eating in season. I’ve written about it here and here and it’s a constant reminder that not only am I trying to have a healthy mind and body but a wallet too.

Secondly,  I want to make sure the foods my family eat are as close to locally grown as possible and last time I checked Guatemala wasn’t in the same area code (or country). Sure it means sacrificing a lot of the fruits and veggies I crave but it’s worth the wait.
